American silver flagonshepherd & boyd, albany, new york, circa 1810Oval urn form with ball finial and 'Wall of Troy' rim, oak leaf and acorn midband on rectangular foot with gadrooned edge, four ball feet, plain 'C' handle, marked under base 'Shepherd & Boyd'.H: 13 1/4 in. 38 oz.PROVENANCE:Initials engraved on one side and coat-of-arms on the other of Horatio Potter (1802-87), Lord Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.NOTE:Potter, considered the founder of The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City, did not live to witness its foundation stone laid, but is entombed there behind the high altar. The cathedral was constructed under the guidance of his nephew, Henry Codman Potter (1835-1908), who succeeded Horatio as Bishop of New York.
