Five Piece Sterling Tea Service Collection by M. Fred Hirsch CO., Inc. c1920 Jersey City, New Jersey History & Context This well regarded, short-lived New Jersey firm was in business c1920-1945 as manufacturers of very fine sterling silverware. The earliest references to tea indicate that it was originally esteemed for its reputed medicinal properties. When introduced into England in the seventeenth century, tea was served only in the coffeehouses w gentlemen were accustomed to gather for friendly conversation. by late in the century, however, tea-drinking had become a domestic entertainment and was enjoyed by men and women alike. This change ment that suddenly every hostess required the proper equipment for serving the expensive new beverage and the ownership of an extensive tea service became an important symbol of one's social position. The same fashions were carefully followed in America (the Colonies) and by the middle of the eighteenth century, Americans were consuming vast amounts of tea. Silver lent importance to the new custom -- as well as serving as a display of the host's wealth. Complete sterling tea sets -- manufactured by the best American firms -- are becoming more difficult to acquire as collectors world-wide enthusiastically compete build unique, vintage tea service collections.
