Very unusual American Victorian silverplate butter dish in the Gothic Revival style popular during the 1860's. The butter dish is not marked, but it was very likely made by Meriden Britannia Company because a version of the same butter dish was shown in their 1867 trade catalog and is included in the photos. The round butter dish is supported above a legged platform by three sinister-looking birds which seem to have the beaks of a heron, but the wing structure of vultures. The frozen guardian-like standing pose of the birds suggests the gargoyle decorative elements of the Gothic Revival period, as does the beaded horizontal frieze running between the splayed wings. This butter dish is featured in Brian D Coleman's book, The Victorian Dining Room, page 56, and was borrowed from my collection for photographic purposes. The book describes it as a "compote" which it clearly is not, and the birds are described as griffins which is also incorrect. This piece is in excellent restored condition, having been completely replated as well as having corrosion arrested and dents removed. Some pock mark signs of arrested corrosion can still be seen at the bottom of the spherical drip basin below the butter tray; the rough surface could not be completely removed without penetrating the basin. This cannot be seen at all once the butter tray is in place and does not detract from the beauty of the piece in any way. Dimensions are as follows: Dish Diameter 6-1/8"; Diameter w/ Birds 9"; Overall Height 7-3/4" (To Top of Lid Handle). PLEASE NOTE: I have made every effort to describe this item accurately and honestly. This item is over 100 years old and may possess certain characteristics that come with being that age. If you have questions regarding the item please contact me in advance of bidding because I do not ship out items on approval, nor do I accept returns. I will not be responsible for a buyer's dissatisfaction and disappointment once the item is received. ALL SALES FINAL! If what you may be expecting is brand new glitzy department store merchandise then this piece probably is not the best choice for you. I am a collector, not a dealer, and do not sell merchandise for a living. I am merely trying to thin down an over-ambitious collection acquired over many years. The successful bidder must contact me within 3 calendar days of the auction closing to provide payment and shipping address information; payment must be received within 7 calendar days. If the buyer fails to comply with these payment requirements, I reserve the right to relist and sell the item without further notice. I will leave negative feedback for deadbeat buyers.
