Unusual and very hard-to-find patented teapot as produced by the Meriden Britannia Co. of Meriden, Connecticut. This design is also known a pump pot and was commissioned for production by a company called Paine, Diehl & Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who did no manufacturing, but engaged silverplate makers of the time to generate versions of this patented design until 1895 when they became listed in Philadelphia business directories. A patent date of of 4-3-1888 is marked on the bottom of the pot so it stands to reason that the pot was produced between 1888 and 1895. The theory behind this design was that by lifting the lid with the attached cylinder and pressing it down the tea would be forced through the spout without lifting the pot. The interior photo shows a filter at the bottom of the pot through which the tea passed on the way to the spout, avoiding a tea leaf clog within the spout. I have actually tested this piece to see how it works and it performs as indicated in the antique advertising picture included in the pictures. The visual appearance is somewhat incidental to the innovative operation of this teapot, but the overall swirl exterior motif on the container and handle creates a unique appearance combined with the downward hook spout in the shape of a dolphin's head. This is a wonderful piece for rounding-out a collection of American Victorian silverplate. The piece is in excellent condition with no dents or damage; the original silverplate has only a minimal exposure of base metal, mostly confined to the spout, and not a detraction from the beauty of this charming item. The teapot requires no necessary restoration unless one wants to have the silverplate completely restored, but as is the existing patina is quite lovely. Dimensions are as follows: Length 10-1/2" (Handle to Spout); Container Diameter 6"; Overall Height 6-1/2". PLEASE NOTE: I have made every effort to describe this item accurately and honestly.
