This is a magnificent complete set of 14 volumes which are slip cased in a half bound leather/cloth binding with leather reinforcement bosses on the front corners(Vol I-IX) and are in excellent overall condition. Each volume contains a soft bound booklet which has detailed technical data as well as extensive natural history regarding the use and application of the woods of 25 species of American Trees. Also included is a folding hard cover for actual thin sliced wood samples mounted in special display window cards. Each species is represented by 3 different wood sections oriented by transverse, tangential and radial cuts. There are a total of 350 species represented and there are 1056 actual wood samples. Volumes I through IX have green covers with beautiful gold lettering on the front cover as well as the spine with black lettering of the woods contained on the back cover. Each has a chrome or nickeled clasp on the outer slip cover. Beginning with volume X the covers change to a reddish brown and the reinforcing corner bosses and metal clasps are discontinued. The leather bound spine and the marbled top and bottom of the slip cases are continued as with volumes I through IX. Volume I is a third edition published in 1910. Volume II is also a third edition but published in 1913. Volume III is a second edition published in 1900. Volumes IV through XIV are first editions and published between 1894 and 1928 in a sequential fashion. Condition details:
1) There is minor surface flaking of the leather to some of the corner reinforcement bosses on volumes I through IX. 2) Volumes I, III and XIV have minor loss of black dye from the spine due to frequent handling when getting the books down from the bookshelf most likely. (See photos # 4 and 5). 3) The inner slip cover for the wood samples in volume I has some surface scratching from the metal clasp brads where they slightly protrude through the protective paper. I have placed a piece of tape over them to prevent future scrapes. 4) The interior paper of the wood sample folders show minor cracking on both sides of the spine where the cover folds, especially on the early green covered volumes I through IX. 5) The wood samples have some minor natural cracking in some of the sections, usually in the transverse oriented cuts. This is essentially an end cut which is the least strong and most brittle of all ways to cut wood. There are minor cracks in 12% of the sections and larger cracks in only .04% of them. 6) There is minor buckling of the marbled paper on the top area of the slip cases in volumes X, XI and XII. (See photo #6). Other than these minor imperfections the general condition is excellent with many volumes in a 'like new' state. A few of the soft cover booklets look unopened and unread. All but two have close to perfect covers. The two that look used have minor loss and cracking on the spines. This is not an ex-library set. I purchased them from a book seller in Rhode Island about 35 years ago. That book seller indicated they were from the personal estate of a university botany professor. They are truly a tree lover's dream. Double your traffic.
