Sign up for my email newsletters by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites DREY PERFECT MASON (on front in nice bold letters, with the words PERFECT and MASON being offset.....smooth lip with ring around collar......quart....beautiful amethyst color....It has a 1/2"annealing crack vertical in top of lip on back; no other chips or damage. Sparkling clean with no haze. The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Most of the manganese used in glass factories came from Germany, so when WW1 broke out in 1914, it became much harder to obtain manganese. Other oxide decolorizers were then used instead, so most bottles made after 1918 or so don't turn amethyst. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight. Others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a box...and some read more
