This is an 18th C. German Writing Box owned by Hieronymous Velde, and Capt. Matheys Fetter of Montgomery, Orange Co., NY.On the underside of the lid is marked "Colmer" which is a city in Elsas, South of Strassbourg w the box was made. Also, on the inside of the lid are the initials HV (Hieronymous Velde) and H-V which stands for Nicolas Everson, a subsequent owner. The box was acquired and owned by the Collector, Rad Curdy, who fancied Revolutionary Period War Memorabilia. He acquired this piece while serving in the Second Holster German Regiment. He resided in Ulster County, NY. His collection was sold at an absolute auction in Pleasant Valley, due east of Poughkeepsie, NY. The box appears to be made from a hard wood. It is wonderfully dovetailed and the patina speaks of it's age. It is 8" long x 3-1/4" w x 1-3/4" h. T is a small splinter-type piece missing on the front age, see photo # 2 and a small piece on the back top edge, see photo #6. However, it is very tight with no restoration, weak joints etc. It is a wonderful early piece for any collection.
