Mid-Victorian Sentimental Rolled Gold "Puzzle" Locket Pendant Acrostic "AEI" for Amity, Eternity, Infinity..or simply "Forever" Circa 1870's from England (no chain) Up for offer is this fine quality, oval-shaped double locket that is an example of the most popular piece of jewellery worn during the 1870's in the Mid-Victorian Era. The wearing of lockets began in earnest when Queen Victoria gave lockets of onyx and pearl to her grandchildren during this time. "A cross or locket is becoming quite de rigueur with bodices open en chale , and seems an indispensable finish to the toilet ."--Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, publ. 1870. Features: This is a large, heavy oval locket pendant in the standard large oval shape that was so very popular during those times. What makes this one unusual is the "secret" message encoded in "puzzle" letters on the front of the locket. Many lockets spelled out " Amite "- French for "Friendship" in the language of love - while this one seems to contain some extra letters. I could make out the A, M (turned on side) I, T, and E (turned on side) but t seems to be extra letters such as a large conspicuous C. Revision: "AEI" lockets also stood for "Amity, Eternity & Infinity.." or simply "Forever" a way to proclaim that special bond of friendship with someone. Features on Back: Incredibly ornate engraved
