ANCIENT CARNELIAN, QUARTZ AND ROCK CRYSTAL BEADS NECKLACE MALI Origin: Tuareg People - MALI Age period: Middle Ages - likely India (Khambhat) Materials: Old carnelian and quartz beads Condition: Good with usage patina Length : 60 cm (24 ") Weight: 130 grams (4,9 oz) ETHNOGRAPHIC CONTEXT Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of nomadic peoples who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trade across the Sahara until the advent of modern transportation. The Tuareg have great respect for beauty; beads form part of a woman's personal adornment and transportable wealth. ITEM DESCRIPTION A collection of ancient carnelian, quartz, rock crystal, corundum beads collected in northern Mali. The carnelian beads are likely Indian in origin and dating to the Middle Ages a period commonly dated from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century to the beginning of the Early Modern Period in the 16th century., Trade in carnelian from Gujarat, especially the town of Khambhat (Cambay), and parts of sub-Saharan Africa probably did take place during the Middle Ages and such an assertion is based upon visual parallels between African and Indian samples, and upon historical sources. The exquisite color range of these beads displays a richness of color as well as a beautiful patina of age and usage. All beads have been hand drilled and the resulting funnel shaped hole in each of thebead is visible through on the inside of the beads. The beads are largely of lenticular cushion shape; all bead surfaces have been hand and time polished; diameters range from 0,7 cm to 1,5 cm. Collected in Mali in the area between Kidal and Gao; these beads are greatly appreciated by the Tuareg in these remote areas.
