This ancient Chinese Bird Pendant is made of translucent Blue Crystal and is very old. On the underside of the bird's body, there is a single ancient Chinese character carved into the crystal. It looks like a capital letter "I" but it really is an ancient Ku-wen Chinese character called "Kung." Kung means any work or ornament that requires skill, labor, and expertise to make. What a SUPER character to have on this amazing crystal pendant!

E-Bay does not like sellers to estimate the date it was made if we do not know for sure, so all I can say is that this pendant is very, very, old!

It measures approximately 51 mm high x 47 wide mm x 16 mm deep (2” x 1.8" x .63”) and weighs about 39 grams or 1.4 ozs. The natural crystal has a fantastic, translucent BLUE color that is SPECTACULAR! This is a Museum Quality, ancient Chinese pendant!

In ancient China, this Bird Pendant would have been worn or placed in the tomb of the departed by his family to protect him or her from evil spirits in this life and in the afterlife. It would also show the spirits that he/she was a wealthy and honorable person. Crystal was highly prized by these early civilizations in China and it was thought to have positive energy to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck and fortune to all who wore a piece on their person--in life and in death. Birds were also the messangers that could carry prayers to Heaven and send messages to those on Earth from departed ancestors and Gods in Heaven.

Condition:

This Bird Pendant has a wonderful, original patina of an ancient piece of carved natual crystal. After being buried for thousands of years, i t has some surface nicks and scratches (that can be seen under 4x magnification in the photos) from contact with harder material, but these do not affect the solid integrity or beauty of the pendant. In fact, they help to date this artifact as an authentic piece of fine crystal that is very old!

I have examined this piece under 4x and 10x magnification and it shows no signs of modern tool marks--only hand tools were used to make this coin. It has been cut, carved, shaped, and drilled with ancient hand tools. I also examined it under Black Light and found no signs of repairs or modern carving. Look carefully at the hole that was drilled with a primitive hand drill (see photos # 4-6) and you can see how the hole is actually curved as it goes through the back of the birds neck--so it could be worn as a pendant. Modern drills would have drilled the hole straight and true--not curved. Thus, another sign that this pendant is original and authentic.

The pendant is primitive and very beautiful! It is 100% original and is typical of the ancient Chinese period thousands of years ago.
