This piece was acquired about 20 years ago by my family who got it from a private collector of ancient Chinese art and artifacts. The history of this item, according to our family records, was that this was one of several pieces that are said to have come from an ancient Chinese temple. We have the following information on this piece. The Budhisattva, wearing a flower and vine designed crown and a long skirt, half kneeling on a lotus flower seat. Held in both hands of the Budhisattva is a leaf shaped tray. This tray carries an engraved tray, or pledge board which has an engraved text in Chinese characters saying in effect that this Budhisattva was made on the order of the Emperor to carry Sakamuni's Sarira. Some of the pictures show lighter than actual because of flash used.MEASUREMENTS:HEIGHT: 16.5 INCHESWIDTH: 6.5 INCHESAPPROXIMATE WEIGHT 1926grams Gold and silver items from ancient times can be precarious. Sometimes you can see green or rust and other times there may be red spots and/or dark tarnishing. This is because in ancient times the gold and silver a lot of times was not pure, and many, if not most of the time, there was bronze in it. Because of the bronze component there can be rust. Because of the silver there can be tarnishing. Gold can also change its look. The overall appearance will not be shiny and new looking. The chemical reactions of the different materials used, and exposure to the elements, is largely responsible for these changes.
