An attractive ancient late Roman oil lamp, dating to around 500 AD, originating from the Holy Land. Of classic form, mold-cast with a light red slip, the body decorated with beautiful impressed patterns.Lamps such as this were filled with olive oil and lit with a thick wick which protruded from the nozzle end. This lamp only has room for one wick and so would not have been very bright on its own, wealthy Romans who could afford to burn a lot of oil would have had lamps with many wicks, or alternatively many lamps like this example. The flickering, muted light of the oil lamp was ubiquitous in the dark nights of ancient times. Despite their usefulness they were also a safety hazard, as the fire from these lamps was a constant threat. Length: 4 1/2 inches. Condition: Very good, unrestored, with wear synonymous with an ancient artefact. The wick end is still blackened by the ancient fire. Provenance: Ex. Israeli private collection, legally exported from Israel and likely found in the north of the country. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
