You are bidding on a beautiful and rare Medieval Silver RIng ornately decorated with a Heart and a diagonal arrow inscribed across the bezel of this beautiful piece.Ancient History The ancient Roman's called their engagement ring the betrothal (Truth) ring. The Romans were the first to wear the ring on the third finger of the left hand. The Greeks and other more ancient civilizations have a well documented history of betrothal, Truth, Promise or (now called) engagement rings. This surviving tradition seems to stem from the Egyptian belief that the vein from this finger leads straight to the heart. It's thought that the Romans were the first to start inscribing or engraving their rings. Many cultures wore their rings on different fingers for different reasons. The Middle Ages The Middle Ages and the Gimmal or "bond" ring was invented, but it's doubtful that this was an engagement ring design. However, sapphires, emeralds and rubies would have been the norm for those who could afford them. Many still chose bronze from ancient cultures and for those who could afford it, silver and gold was quite popular. The pope in the 9 th century decreed that a promise or betrothal ring was necessary for formal recognition of a union. It wasn't until the late Medieval period w weddings as we know them were invented; although many ceremonies took place in various Common Era and pre Common Era cultures celebrating a union for a "a year and a day", a lifetime, all the way down to 24 hours (or a "fling" of embrace) incorporated into legality for the growing religious influences during the early Byzantine (Christian) culture. Because diamond is the hardest and strongest mineral on earth it was seen to resist fire and steel and thus symbolize the unbending union of a man and woman in wedlock. So it became more commonplace for the European super wealthy and royalty to give a diamond engagement ring at this time. Less wealthy citizens would have given a Fede (faith) ring in the form of two clasped hands more akin to the more modern claddagh (clasped hands) engagement rings. Also the heart shape was still popular stemming from remote history and pre Greek cultures throughout the Medieval era.
