A genuine ancient gold over copper goblet/beaker from the Tairona Culture of Northern Columbia circa 1200-1500 A.D. It measures 135mm high x 85mm at the widest area of the mouth of the goblet.The weight is 53 gm (1.85 oz).The vessel is composed of a thin sheet Gold over copper alloy called Tumbago,which the Tairona,Inca,Chimu,Moche and other Pre Columbian cultures were known to have used.Tumbago made ritual and political power objects less prone to damage during use rather than softer objects of pure Gold.This could have been used for religious ceremony or for political gatherings of chieftains where corn beer was consumed. It has obviously been restored from a crushed condition and the lower right front corner is missing.Also the rim of the mouth of the goblet has been shredded by soil erosion.There are several repairs visible on the interior made with very thin fiberglass/epoxy tape.The restoration was professionally done.The artifact has provenance from a current Great Britain collection and can be Googled.I will supply that information to questions asked about this listing and to the Buyer. The Tairona people occupied Northwestern Columbia circa A.D. Their culture very largely escaped Spanish Colonial domination because of their fierce military opposition and,when things became overwhelming from huge populations of colonists,moving into the highlands of northwestern Columbia to remain independent.They remain an indigineous population to this day.
