An ancient silver Roman denarius minted under Emperor Antoninus Pius ( Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius ). Struck 145 - 161 AD at the Rome mint. The obverse with the bust of Antoninus, facing right. The legend reading:ANTONINVS AVG[vstsv] PIVS P[ater] P[atriae]"Antoninus Dutiful Augustus, Father of the People"The reverse with winged thunderbolt on draped throne. The legend reading:CO[n]S[vl] IIII"Fourth time Consul"Diameter: 18 mm.Weight: 3.00 g.Provenance: Ex. Collection of Professor J.E.Seaver. Professor Seaver taught ancient history at the University of Kansas and was a keen opera lover, hosting his own radio show on the subject for nearly 60 years.
