This beautiful coin: 1601 Phillip III 2M Grade A about 17mm size. Spectacular coin. This is a true piece of important American History. St. Augustine Fl. is the site of the first permanent settlement in what is now the United States. It was founded in 1565 and will soon be 500 years old. Florida was therefore a Spanish Colony from 1565 to 1821 when it became a Territory of the United States and in 1845 became a State. The British possessed Florida for a 20 year period 1764-1784 and it then once again became Spanish Territory until 1821 when it went to the US. Historically, Florida and St. Augustine were instrumental in the development of the United States and remain important today for many important reasons. You are encouraged to research Florida and St. Augustine on the internet and in libraries for an insight into the fascinating and vibrant contributions of this wonderful historic place to our nation. You should note that in our country's early days, cash money was in short supply throughout all of North America, the American Colonies and the developing West. Those places trusted the value of Spanish coinage so much that Spanish money became the official accepted standard of the United States until the 1850s' when the US could manufacture enough of its' own coinage.
