A Horse Bit with a History
Just outside of the Sahara Desert sits a little village
named "Toulal"
It's near the Algerian border
It is a village with strong cultural Berber traditions
that exist until today
For over a century now this horse bit has remained in one family
and has been passed on from generation to generation, son to son
I successfully purchased this from the current owner, just recently
It has been used for decades as villagers paraded and danced with it
through the streets of this tiny saharan village to celebrate the circumscison of each male
But t is something even more intriguing about this item
Toulal is a village w jews and muslims lived together
and they still come back today to honor their dead
And in this village a jewish ironmaker lovingly made this horse bit
And he wanted to stay at peace with his muslim neighbors
So he "masked" a judaic design that also bordered
on the tuareg and berber tastes of the region
Giving it a look that is neither clearly jewish nor berber
It's a beautiful and romantic piece from the past
of Morocco
