One of the most important producers of fine cloisonne in Japan, the firm of Ando Jubei played a major role in the evolution of this art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often referred to as the "Golden Age" of cloisonne making in that country. This fine, signed vase by Ando Jubei is an excellent example of the superb craftsmanship for which that firm is renowned. Along with the Ando Jubei mark, the vase is stamped "Made in Japan" along the outer rim of the base, and probably dates from between 1930 and 1950. The vase measures 9 inches high, 3 1/4 inches at its widest point and 2 1/4 inches at its base. Apart from a small, pinhead sized blemish (shown in photograph number 7), and a small ding to the base rim resulting in some minor enamel loss to two of the small circular cells just above the rim (photograph number 6), the vase is in good condition and free of cracks, lines, or other problems. Cloisonne with the Ando Jubei mark is of course considered highly desirable by advanced collectors of this ware. I have begun this piece at a low price and with no reserve, in the hope that it will achieve its appropriate level.
