Book-stand Mainpuri 1898-1903 h 24 cms; w 25.5 cms; d 19 cms Of Shisham wood, carved and inlaid with brass wire (Tarkashi work), with brass hinges and mounts. The stand is composed of four pieces of wood; two rectangular leaves, the upper parts of which are carved and pierced with openings in the Gothic manner and the lower parts of which are arched; a shelf that is framed by a brass band screwed to the two leaves beneath the openings and a hinged shaped support on which the stand rests and which, when opened, is secured by a latch. The front face of the stand and both sides of the shaped support are inlaid with dense designs of scrolls, circles and trellises framed within simple intertwining borders. Possibly the work of Chokhe Lal, a leading Artisan of this period. A similar example can be seen in the V & A Museum and is pictured in Amin Jaffer’s book “Furniture from British India and Ceylon”, page 307. A rare and decorative item, not to be confused with a Koran stand. Please note that dispatch will be delayed from the normal three days due to holiday.
