Man's? Woman's? MANCHU Robe - Surcoat
China late 19th Century

Blue summer silk jacquard gauze patterned in a meandering peony, spigs of bamboo, plum blossoms design. The hand wrought embroidered Manchu man's? / woman's? robe dates from the late Qing Dynasty ca. late 1880-1900's. Emroidered with satin stitching & Peking knot aka forbidden seed stitching. The equisitely wrought satin polychrome color stitching decorative detail of auspicious symbols, sprigs of flowers peonies, lotus, roses, & iris flow through out the field of blue gauze silk. Hemline is borderd with embroirdery of Canton blue flower & gold decorative couching. Traditionally worn for wedding, anniversary, or birthday celebrations.

Original unlined interior. Robe flap closes to "left" side one knotted toggle at neck with four pair of loops which will accomadate buttons with stud shanks, (small button links may also work) 1.5" high Mandarin style collar. Length from neck to hem 46", across chest 27.25", displayed on pole from cuff to cuff 63". See additional condition report below.

Large wide dramatic sleeve cuffs that drop 20.5" from wrist, cuffs are original cut out & appliqued, profusely wrought in forbidden stitch vibrant polychrome colours with a design of butterfly & flowers, edge with same border as robe's hem & flap. See additional condition report below.

CONDITION: Very Good - exterior fabric is sturdy, usual loose threads through out, commensurate with a garment this age .

Loss & fraying to a decorative black ribon that runs around neck area. Decorative neck will need to be stitch in place. Original to the garment decorative 1/2 black ribbon is lifting appears to have been originaly affixed with glue. All other details of garment are stitched.

All the fore mentioned is minimal considering the garments history & age. Nonetheless displays well, the visual impact the robe's artistic beauty is not impeded by these trials of time.
