This auction features a fine antique mantle clock by Ansonia. This large clock measures 16 inches wide, 14 ½ inches tall and 6 inches in depth. The case on this clock and the figure are each made of spelter with a nice even bronzed finish. The finish looks to be original to me and is complete, even and free from any pitting or loss of finish. The dial is porcelain, clean, bright and original and is free from any cracks or repairs. T is a thick original beveled glass door, which covers the open escapement face. T is a “bruise” on the right-hand side of the glass door. This has been t many years according to the previous owner and you can see if you look closely enough w the glass has “spider webbed”. T are no missing pieces of glass as the “bruise” is all internal. I believe this adds character to this fine clock and I would not replace, as it is not noticeable except on close inspection. The base is in excellent condition and stunning in appearance. The bronzed figure looks to me to be Archimedes. I have seen several reference books w this figure was called "The Philosopher" but being that Archimedes was considered the greatest mathematical mind of his day, I believe this is truly who this figure represents as evidenced by the numbers and characters on the tablet and the set of dividers which he is holding. In any case, the figure read more
