This rare and early engraved nautical chart was found in a sailor's ditty bag bought at a South Shore Estate sale. This Long Island Sound Block Island to Great Egg Harbour chart published in 1857 (with corrections in 1861, May 1862, Jan 1876, and Feb. 1879) by the British Admirality ( and produced by the British Hydrographic Office, published by J&C Walker)) is in good shape considering it's age, and that it was a working chart ( although t are no ink/lead markings). As you can see in the photos ( please email me if you require additional, or higher resolution images) t is a fairly large tear 16 inches long extending from the left hand edge ( along the bottom edge of the Fisher Island Sound inset map ). T is also a 6 inch tear from the right hand edge (about a quarter of the way down), and a missing bit on the right hand bottom edge ( an inch wide by a half inch long). Various other flea bites around the outside edge in spots, and some staining/foxing is again evident in the photos, but none really, detract from the main body of the chart itself (most are outside the central image along the border). The tears are both quite clean, with no loss, and could be easily repaired to an almost unnoticable state.Water depths and sand bars are all carefully recorded as are all coastal lighthouse ( highlighted in colour).T are also two inset maps with more detailed markings of Fisher Island Sound and Litttle Egg Harbour, as well as an interesting tide table. The coasts of New Jersey, New York, Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island are all visible . Chart measures 39 inches wide by 27 inhces tall. ****This Chart along with the other Long Island map I have listed are the last two charts of the lot that I was fortunate to find, and have been selling over the last few weeks. I don't expect to find so many clean and rare items again, so don't let these last two get away, if you're a serious collector**** We will gladly ship worlwide, with shipping charges the sole responsability of the high bidder, the final cost of which are dependent on the purchasers location and choice of shipment method. The British Hydrographic Office was founded in 1795 by George III, who appointed Alexander Dalrymple as the first Hydrographer to the Admiralty. He immediately set to work but it was not until 1800 that the first Admiralty chart was published of the waters around Quiberon Bay in Brittany. Unlike the U. S. Coast Survey the Hydrographic Office was given permission to sell charts to the public and they produced a great number of sea charts covering every corner of the globe. Most of the Admiralty charts produced by the Hydrographic Office delineated coastline as well as high and low water marks and recorded depth of water as established by soundings. In addition these charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued mariners across the world. Thanks to the innovations of Sir Francis Beaufort, who developed the Beaufort Scale of wind strength, the British Hydrographic Office became one of the leading producers of sea charts.
