Thegood news on these four 1920s vintage French panels is that much of this beautiful artistry can still be used. The bad news is, it will take someone with a great sense of style as well as some work to recreate what were once grand window coverings. The techniques include cut-work, appliquéd linen with tambour embroidery (by machine) on fine net mesh. This gives the gauzy, romantic effect that dressed every pre-WWII Paris apartment. When Elsa entertained Rick in her apartment, panels like these probably covered her bedroom windows. Two of the panels are their original length. One panel has been shortened to probably ¾ length; the fourth has been shortened to less than half its original length—but it is the most intact and is, in fact, ready to hang. The design in the mesh repeats roughly every 13-14 inches. In the longest panel, you have 5 repeats before you get to the heavily decorated border. The bottom border is almost 18 inches wide. The finished inside edge of the panel is scalloped, with wave-like linen appliqué. The panel that has been reworked to be most serviceable measures roughly 59 inches wide by about 44-1/2 inches long. Because it was cut from a much longer panel, it has only two lines of repeated decoration, with the left side being more heavily decorated with appliquéd floral and foliate cutwork. This comes from an originally left-facing panel (meaning the narrow appliquéd linen decoration runs along what would be the inside right face). One of the obviously damaged panels is roughly 122 inches long. Unfortunately, because of the damage to the outside of the panel, it is only a bit over 30 inches wide at its narrowest. You can see from the photos that three of the panels have missing or separated decoration, which leaves one edge unfinished. This is a left-facing panel. Its mate is also 122 inches long, but also has severely damaged edges that leave this one a maximum of approximately 25 inches wide. It was originally a right-facing panel. The final panel is a right-facing piece, but damage to the outside decoration means the maximum width on this one would be roughly 28 inches, and it is only a bit more than 76 inches long. Right out of the box, these could be cut and shaped to work with three different sized windows. The two longest panels could be hemmed to be very narrow 25-inch panels. If someone were truly to fall in love, the highest and best use would be to restore these on new, modern netting, and replace the netting that’s missing. But that would be a labor of love, and would require an investment of time and talent. Please add me to your favorites. Over the next couple of weeks I will be selling off my collection of antique and vintage linens purchased from some known, and upscale estates. (I will share with the new owners the provenance of their new purchases when it is known.) I closed my shop and simply have no room. (CONSIDER PHOTOS FOR COMPLETE VISUAL DESCRIPTION.)
