Original soldier's letter with significant historical content written by Private Elias D. Hills, Co. G, 121 st Regiment of the New York State Volunteers commanded by Colonel B. Franchet. Letterhead reads, "In camp near Bakersville , Md. Sunday October 5 th /62." Just two days earlier, on October 3, 1862 President Lincoln reviewed the Army camped at Bakersville, concluding an historic meeting with General McClellan. Pvt. Hills participated in this review and two days later penned this letter to his father. are some of the highlights: "we were inspected by Abraham Lincoln the president of these United States besides which we saw the following celebrated Generals..McClellan, Burnside, Franklin, Slocum, Bartlett..." "Old Abe is the most common looking man you ever saw, he was dressed in black and wore a tall black hat with a weed on it..." "I have seen a host of dead horses killed in this battle, these were burned with the rebels." "...the generals were dressed very nicely and some rode the most beautiful horses.
