Authentic African mask - from the estate of Barry Brooks, world-renowned African big-game hunter. Mr. Brooks traveled to Africa on several safaris during the 1920's and 1930's. This is one of several masks my father had purchased from the estate sale of Mr. Brooks' belongings. This mask is one of the last we have left (we have another mask for sale at this time - that mask and this one are the last 2 we have). The dimensions of the mask are as follows - it is 13 inches tall, and 9 inches wide. It is 4 inches deep (by that, we mean the curve win a person's face fits within the mask). We assume it is made of ebony. This piece is hand carved, it is all one piece. It is a fascinating piece of original Africana - we have been told that the black and white faces represent the living and spiritual aspects of the same person, rather than indicative of anything racial. This explanation would seem to be accurate as one will notice, the white face is exactly the same, complete with hair style and scarifications, as the black face. The paint, or pigment used, we have no information about, except that it is original to the piece. This is a particularly fine specimen of original African tribal (or primitive) artwork. Quite frankly, this is probably a museum piece. Considering the political climate in the continent of Africa today, it is unlikely that works of this kind will be seen more than once in a lifetime - it is unlikely works of this kind are even made in this modern age. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I do not say that lightly. Don't miss this one - it will not come again. Happy bidding!
