This is a wonderful antique Santa Claus candy container made in Germany. This large Santa measures about 11 1/4" to the top of his hood. He is an early Santa and is in remarkable condition for his age. He is hand painted composition, his clothing is felt, and he has a rabbit fur beard. He stands on a wooden mica covered base that has a knot hole in the center. He wears a pumpkin colored robe and has a little wicker basket. He carries a feather tree trimmed with tiny ornaments and miniature pocket watch hangs from his belt. This tiny watch is made of brass and has a glass crystal. He has no flaws to speak of except a few tiny moth holes at the back of his hood. This charming old Santa with a most wonderful face is truly a rare ornament from Christmas past. I have had questions about Santa's age and condition. .. I am not an expert but my guess would date him to the 1910 era. I have examined him carefully and I find minor evidence of age and no repairs or restoration. I am sure that the buyer will be very pleased. In answer to further questions, the paint on Santa's hands and face has apparently faded or oxidized with age and is a much darker color under his sleeves and hood. His clothing has faded just very slightly. .. The pocket watch is a toy and does not wind or open.
