Here is something amazing and beautiful that you don't see every day!
A 14K yellow mechanical gold bug pin from the Victorian period by Riker Brothers, Newark, NJ. The wings are beautifully enameled with blue and green. The eyes are faceted perfectly matched emeralds, and there is a ruby set in the head as well. The antennae and legs are highly detailed in gold. The underbody is all 14K gold. It is in perfect condition. It measures 1 1/8 inches from wing-tip to wing-tip and 7/8 inches from tip of front legs to back legs. The pin attaches to clothing by virtue of a pinch mechanism. Within the body is a spring. When you squeeze the wings together, the pincers open, and when the wings are released, they clutch the fabric so that the pin is fastened. ADDITIONALLY, the little body moves independently of the wings, so it moves when you do. The Riker Brothers jewelry firm was most notable as one of the few American companies to create plique- -jour enamel jewelry, which included beautiful Art Nouveau styles, Japanesque water birds, and Renaissance style pendants and brooches. Early on they manufactured Masonic and religious goods, gold fob chains and charms . In the 1870’s they added onyx and cameo lockets and rings to their line and eventually expanded to include high quality jewelry in platinum and gold . In 1916 at the Newark Industrial Exposition the pieces exhibited by Riker Brothers included platinum jewelry with diamonds, pearls and colored gemstones .
