This is also called a morgenstern (German for morning star) iron hand made mace. The morning star was virtually identical to the ball and chain mace, the only difference being that a morning star always had a spiked ball for striking. Like the ball and chain, the morning star consisted of a metal ball attached to a handle. By extending the weapon's center the wielder created a great deal of momentum in a swing. The increased force of impact upon the target was devastatingly effective against armored and unarmored opponents. Their is also a short sword concealed in the hollow handle. I'm NO expert in this field. The piece was traded to me as dating to the 16th Century and it looks it to me, but you may know know better.. Very heavy construction, high quality. It is 33 inches long, the concealed sword is 19 inches. If this is not 16th Century, then I wonder if it isn't a Victorian piece . A lot old armor was made back then. The quality is super with a great patina. Some of the spikes are missing. . . I sell all my listings WITHOUT a RESERVE. Study the pictures before bidding, and ask questions if you are unclear about anything, be sure item is what you want before purchasing, because I DO NOT take returns. We described things as best we can but we are not experts in every field. You may know more about the item then we do. You are the judge as to quality and value. I will combine shipping. I try to list several new items every few days, so keep checking my listings that include many early Cowboy and Mexican pieces selling all the time
