This auction is for a rare antique 17 th century brass square stepped base candlestick with extracting hole for candle stub removal. European, probably English (though may be French as the French Huguenot refugees did much of the English silversmithing) the plinth and candle cup are cast in two halves and then soldered together with silver solder, typical of 17 th century craftsmanship.
The bottom has a copper plug, which is also typical of 17th Century craftsmanship. The plug prevents hot candle wax from seeping out of the bottom and ruining furniture. This candlestick is in excellent condition, well cared for throughout its lifetime and simply beautiful. It has been brought to my attention that some of the pics look as if there are solder or repairs. There have been no repairs! What you may see are reflections or shadows that look like repairs, but they are not. Similar examples of this candlestick appear in The Brass Book by Herbert Schiffer. It measures 6 3/4" high and the square stepped base is 4 1/2" square. A rare find for any antique candlestick collector! *! *As always, I combine shipping to save you $. *If shipping is less, I'll refund the difference!* *All of my items are shipped Insured with Delivery Confirmation! I have a dog and I reuse packing supplies (trying to stay green and keep shipping cost down) and because I buy items to resell at various places, I can't guarantee any of my items come from a pet-free or smoke-free environment.
