This is a very rare and beautiful 400 year old apothecary jar; a similar piece appears on page 153 of the 1978 edition of the Rudolf Drey book, APOTHECARY JARS. We have posted a picture of it below, with the permission of the publishers. The jar on auction is from an estate collection of 8 that will be listed individually. Six have already been listed or sold. DESCRIPTION: It is 7.5 inches tall and the circumference around its widest part is 14.5 inches around. The opening has a diameter of 4 inches. It has a crack that starts at the mouth of the jar and travels down about 4 inches that you may see in the pictures below. The inscription describes its former contents; Basilicon, or basilicum; this was the name given to various ointments that were believed to have 'sovereign' virtues. One such example was an unguent composed of rosin, wax, pitch, and oil, which pre-modern surgeons used as a suppurative. Examples of these rare pieces may today be seen in convent museums at Burgos , Toledo and Barcelona , Spain . This Jar has been in our family for many generations and it has never been offered for sale or auction. My aunt, who was a Pharmacist in Cuba , brought it with her to Geneva , Switzerland , before the 1955 revolution in Cuba . No additional provenance is available. We stand behind our description with a 100% refund guarantee; no questions asked, within 7 Days of the items arrival. It must be returned in the same condition as we shipped it. The buyer pays for return shipping and insurance. Good luck bidding! Sellers: Get your own map of past buyers. Fast. Simple.
