This pretty set is made of earthenware. The deep tea saucer measures 6 1/8" (15.1 cm) in diameter and 1 1/4" (3.2 cm) high (or deep). The handleless cup measures 3 1/2" (8.9 cm) in diameter at the mouth and 2 3/4" (7 cm) in height. The first sponging on porcelain started around 1835, although spatter came before that. From a distance, the sponging, although blue and red, appears purple, because of the denseness of the work and because the red color is actually maroon. The blue is under the glaze and the maroon sponging and the rose design are all over painted. The saucer has an embossed ring that is much larger than the cup bottom, and so is not a cup ring, but rather just part of the design. There are also multiple embossed "ribs" on the inside of the saucer. The cup has 12 sides and a dainty black stem off the rose. The sponging covers almost the entire cup opposite the rose and carries over into the inside rim of the cup. There is a $1.00 charge for a new box within a larger new box and ample packing material to ensure safe delivery.
