English Handcarved Large circa 1860's-1890's Whitby Jet Mourning Necklace This is a stunning necklace that comes from our antique jewellery collection. I love the Whitby Jet Yorkshire pieces...they are made from the slatey, lightweight fossilized carbon layers in the cliffs near Whitby, England. During the 1860's they became popular with the death of H.R.H. Prince Albert, the royal consort of Queen Victoria. The beads and brooches had already been made for Victorian society as a sign of wealth--but when "Bertie" died, the whole Yorkshire jewellery industry took off in popularity. Victorian women didn't just wear this kind of chunky jewellery in mourning, but also because it was the fashion statement of its time! You can still find Victorian postcards and Cartes-des-Visites with early photos of Victorian women wearing their black jet beads. Weight: only 2 1/2 ounces. Jet is lightweight and could be made into large, chunk pieces without sacrificing the comfort of the wearer. Length: 12" in length (return) That means it hangs down 12" in a loop. If opened up, it would stretch out 24" from end-to-end. (See the picture of Queen Victoria's 4th daughter H.R.H. Princess Louise wearing two strands below.) This necklace slips easily over one's head and hangs read more
