It contains cdvs and cabinet cards of infants, children, women, and men. The album can hold up to 64- cdvs and 24- cabinet cards. One of the most notable is a signed (Nov. 29, 1886) cabinet card of the Honorable Aylett R. Cotton . Judge Cotton was a native of Ohio , and the son of John Cotton. He was also a descendent of the noted Cotton family of the Colonial days. He attended Cottage Hill Academy in Ellsworth , Ohio and Alleghany College in Meadville , Pennsylvania . After college, he went to south, and taught for 2 years in Fayette County , Tennessee . Then he went to Iowa and studied law in Davenport . He was admitted to the bar in Iowa . Determined to try his fortunes on the coast, Judge Cotton traveled by an ox team from Iowa to California in search of gold. He arrived in California in October, 1849, and went immediately into the mines. After a successful 2 years, he traveled back to Iowa and resumed his professional work at DeWitt. After more than 30 years as a prominent and one of Iowa 's leading members of the state, Cotton was elected judge of Clinton County (1851). He held that position for 2 years, and in 1857, he was elected as a member of the Constitutional Convention. He represented Clinton County in the legislature for 4 years; a portion of this time was spent as the Speaker of the House. In 1870, he was elected to Congress (42 nd Congress - March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873) and served for 2 years. He served in Congress during the presidency of President Ulysses S. Grant . Judge Cotton was re-elected and he served for another 2 years (43 rd Congress). In 1883, Judge Cotton returned to the Pacific Coast and occupied a leading position in the legal profession in San Francisco . Judge Cotton was prominently identified with the Masonic order for a half century. He was a Grand Master of the State of Iowa in 1855 and in 1856. He was a 33 rd degree Mason, Scottish Rite . In addition, he is an honored member of the California Pioneer Society. Judge Cotton was married to Miss Hattie E. Walker of Pennsylvania ; she and her parents moved to Iowa when she was an infant. It is not certain whether the other photos in this album are descendents of Judge Cotton or whether he was related to Miss Sarah E. Sears. This album is the best that I have seen; it is extremely remarkable. WHEW.....WHAT A VERY REMARKABLE PIECE OF HISTORY. THIS ALBUM IS 120 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!
