Up for auction is this original cast iron "Speaking Dog" bank. Made by the Shepard Hardware Co. in Buffalo, NY and designed by Peter Adams & Charles Shepard. The bank is completely original with no restoration. Has some paint loss but otherwise looks great. It works verywell, the only thing I noticed on the bank is the change drop in the bench does not close all of the way and the dog is loose, it is not broken it just looks like whatever originally bonded the dog to the base has worn away (I do not have the key). To operate the bank, press the lever on the base near the dog, which causes the girl's right arm to move back, dropping the coin placed on the tray into the seat opening beside her. At the same time, the dog opens its mouth as if barking and wags its tail. This bank has been in my family since it was purchased new! It is 7 1/2" tall x 7" wide and is marked with both the July 14 and October 20 1885 patents on the bottom. S/H is $15.00 for 48 states, includes insurance.
