The iconography subject is closely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. The Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan made its apparition in 1579 at Kazan the capital of Tartar Khanat recently captured by the Russians. By this Icon young people are blessed at the altar. Feasts were established on 22 October (5 November) and 8 (21) July. This Russian Orthodox Icon was painted in 1890-1900s. Size = 8 3/4" X 7" x 3/4"(22 X 18 X 2cm) Weight = 445 gr.(16 Oz) Size of kiot =30 X 25 X 6.5cm(12" X10" X 2 3/4") Weight = 1700gr.(3 Lb12 oz) The icon was painted with egg tempera on a wooden panel covered with levkas (gesso, special priming). Icon was not restored. Excellent condition.Icon covered brass hand engraved oklad.
