Antique PRISTINE 18" *St. Louis Silver Co* Lidded Stein - Tankard QUADRUPLE Silver 1890s Limited

Not Seen On eBay Before

ANTIQUE Estate "18" Tall LIDDED "Presentation Award Stein" Created By the St. Louis Silver Company In 1890's !!

$$Appraised Value $$ 400

Not being a stein expert I had this treasure appraised by a renowned stein expert and even they had a difficult time with this very unique and desirable Tankard as limited information is available about the history of this fabulous U.S. manufacturer (1893-1912) . They suggested that it was probably a promotional stein (because of its unique size), crafted in the mid 1890's and limited production.

Grandpa had this unusual stein displayed proudly with others in his stein collection. Upon his passing my Mother was given the collection she passed it on to me and Now I offer my Grandfathers Handsome Antique Tankard to enhance your collection. Stein has never been sold or resold!!

This Special stein is Very Large (18" tall - 5¼" across the base - 3½" across the mouth) Heavy (nearly 5 lbs.) even the handle is "Paul Bunyan" size at 7¾" long . The Outside of the body is Quarter Sawn Flemish Oak and all the metal work from the Handle, the interior well, the Banding, the decorative flowering grape leaf filigree to the lid is all Quadruple Silver-plate . Quadruple signified that all the metal work had been put through the electrosilver plating process four times to ensure that all areas were covered with silver. The metal work itself is believed to be of Britannia Metal which because of its innt silver color is considered the best base metal for the plating process.

Those of you familiar with the unusual work of the St. Louis Silver Company will immediately recognize this as a larger Rare "Big Brother" to their lovely smaller steins seen on eBay and in the collections of many stein experts. It features the same attention to craftsmanship and detail that enabled them to apply for a U.S. Patent in 1904 for their process.

Steins manufactured from 1904 until the closing of their factory in 1912 bore the words "Patent Pending" and sometimes even the date usually under the word Quadruple to signify this distinction. This stein crafted before they applied for their patent has only the word Quadruple below their Company Logo indicative of earlier work 1890s (see all Photos) . The company began producing these and similar styled steins combining the softness and beauty of natural wood with the striking contrast of intricate metal work covered in silver in 1893.

This Pristine stein has been well cared for and it has NOT been cleaned . The appraisal expert and "Stein Collectors International" both advised me not to clean the silver or wood as both have achieved a beautiful patina only attained through age while the under side of the lid and interior well retain much of their original silver luster. The overall condition is Excellent and shows NO signs of use or wear to either the wood or the metal work. The lid is Solidly Attached as is the handle and all metal banding and scroll work. Impossible to capture the feeling of true craftsmanship, intricate metal work, size and weight of this unique heavy Tankard in a photo.

For those considering cleaning email after purchase and I will pass along an article from the Stein Collectors International "Prosit" on complete restoration of St Louis Silver Co. steins and their known History (interesting, informative reading even if you decide to leave this beautiful stein as is).

This Stein is quite heavy when packed to eliminate potential shipping damage (nearly 9 lbs.) so I recommend that you select Priority Shipping to speed delivery and minimize handling. Suggest strongly that you elect to buy insurance as well. In any case your shipping cost has NO additional charge for handling, etc. Whether a collector of fine Antiques, Tankards or Quadruple Silver you will be pleased! Topic of conversation and useful...
