This is a lovely Antique Cobalt Blue Porcelain Enamel Washboard in Excellent Condition. The washboard is a SOAP SAVER offered in the Sears Roebuck Mail Order Catalog in 1899. As the photos show this washboard is in excellent antique condition and absolutely gorgeous. The upper metal and lower cobalt blue porcelain enamel scrubbing surface have no cracks, dents or holes. Both sides show very minor oxidation and that wonderful patina that aged metal gets. The deep rich cobalt blue color of the scrubbing surface itself is beautiful. I could find 2 very minor chips which are tiny and hard to notice at all due to their small size, location and corrugated design of the surface. The wood has no chips or missing wood and shows some age checking which doesn't distract. The wood has that wonderful silver gray patina that aged wood gets. The front of the washboard clearly reads "NATIONAL WASHBOARD CO., CHICAGO-SAGINAW-MEMPHIS, SOAP SAVER, TRADEMARK REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN U.S.A. NO. 197, PATENT 118". The back reads in solid black letters "PORCELAIN ENAMEL WASHBOARD - THE WASHING SURFACE IS MADE FROM A SHEET OF STEEL INTO WHICH HAS BEEN FUSED A COATING OF PORCELAIN ENAMEL (A COMPOSITION OF FINE GLASS). IT IS DURABLE, SANITARY AND FLEXIBLE AND WILL NOT RUST OR CORRODE. IT IS NOT AFFECTED BY ALKALI OR STRONG WASHING COMPOUND". The washboard read more
