TOPSY Miniature Oil Lamp by Dithridge, Ca. 1899 Topsy Night Lamp, S1-339 About 7" tall to top of shade About 2 1/2" in diameter at base "Topsy" Night Lamp with Brown Hand-Painted Scenes S1-339 Manufactured by Dithridge & Company, Ca. 1899 Acorn burner with unmarked thumb wheel Minor flea-bites on top edge of shade Found with Hand-Painted Scenes in Brown, Green and Gray Background & History: Two different sources identify this lamp as a "Topsy" night lamp manufactured by Dithridge and Company, a glass maker located in Pittsburgh. The first source is William Heacock in his book "Old Pattern Glass According to Heacock"; Heacock reproduced an old company ad for the lamp which is shown below. He cites the date of the ad as 1899. The second source is Ann McDonald in a 1982 article in "The Antique Trader". She notes that the lamp was made before 1902 (when Dithridge merged with the Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company. The Topsy lamp is also shown in Figure 339 of Frank & Ruth Smith's book "Miniature Lamps"; the Smith's note that the lamp is made of "Bristol-type milk glass with green and gray painted scenes. . . also found with other scenes in brown." It's McDonald who notes that the scenes were hand-painted and that on one side of the lamp they are painted with a sailboat on the base and a windmill on the shade and on the other side with farm scenes on both base and shade. Condition of this lamp: This lamp is in very good condition. The inner top edge of the shade has several inconspicuous flea-bites but t are no other chips, cracks or defects on either the base or the shade. The brown hand-painted decor which was fired onto the glass is in fine condition with no signs of wear. The brass hardware on this lamp has been polished. The collar is tightly attached to the font; it does have 3 tight vertical splits which do not affect its integrity. The burner screws tightly into the collar and the thumb wheel adjusts the wick that is in this lamp as it should. T are 3 small cracks in the bottom of the burner gallery and these have caused the gallery to look slightly twisted. The gallery still holds the chimney shade securely in place and the slight twisting isn't particularly noticeable except on close inspection. Measurements are provided below the first photo to the left. The Topsy is a dainty little night lamp and the shade on this example has a translucence that give it an opalescent quality. It's easy to imagine this little lamp gracing a bedside table around 1900 and providing a bit of light--just enough to protect the room's occupant from those things that go bump in the night.
