For centuries, in Spain, the Spanish Mastiff has been an integral part of the security of estates, ranches and livestock. This necessary and very valuable dog's only protection from the packs of wolves was an iron Carlanca, a spiked collar that protected their necks from wolf bites. When I was a child, this particular collar was worn by my grandfather's favorite mastiff, Macuto. Our ranch, that had been in our family for 3 generations before my grandfather, had 8 mastiffs and these collars had been used for generations as they were in those days, an extremely vital tool. Being made of iron, they lasted yet were adjustable to suit each new generation of mastiff. According to my grandfather, this collar was already in use in 1787, but I do not know exactly how much older it is. It is in excellent condition for its age and use. T were originally 33 spikes ranging in 3 sizes: 1 ¼ inch, 2 inch, and 2 ¼ inches. Twenty Seven of these spikes form part of the sides of the collar. The remaining 6 spikes are separate pieces which were attached to the collar through a hole in the 3 side panels. Two of these 6 spikes are now missing. Four remain. The 3 side panels also each have an iron ring, 1 ¼ inch inner diameter, through which the dog could be restrained allowing for visitors to approach, though mostly these dogs were meant to run loose and protect. This collar is 3 ¾ inches wide and 22 inches long with an inner diameter of 7 inches. ABOUT ME: My name is Pilar and I live in Newport Beach, California. Warning to all very cold, snow climate buyers: Packages containing porcelain or glass objects should be allowed to warm to room temperature (about an hour) inside your home before you open them to avoid cracking.
