19" Long x 3 1/8" Wide A splendid example of early cookware, this late 18th to early 19th century (circa 1780-1840),almost certainly of Pennsylvanian origin. Typical skimmers such as this featured a shallow perforated bowl with a long iron handle. The piece was used by an early open hearth cook to skim grease and impurities off the tops of liquids such as broth, stock etc. The long iron handle has some pitting and oxidation from age, though overall the piece is in very good original condition. Similar skimmers can be seen illustrated on fig 885 of "Early American Antique Country Furnishings" by George Nuemann. A great period decorative piece that would be sure to make an excellent addition to any period collection or country decorum.
