In the first few days of this listing we believed this item was an 18th century farrier horse tool. Thanks to a helpful ebayer and then some further research we found that this a race knife and was used to mark logs / timber. Wonderful super rare antique / primitive 18th century Race Knife for marking timber / logs. The tool is just over 6 inches long and the wood section is about 4 inches. In one side of the wood is carved / etched WSI 1762 ( I think it's 1762 it could also be 1769 see photos) and WSI is carved again on the top side of the wood. This tool is nearly 250 years old so please use the many large photos included for best judge of condition on the general wood wear, scuffs and chipping / scratches in the wood and spots of mostly light rust on the what looks like cast iron of hinged bottom piece and dual pronged metal tool part.. This is not a reproduction. This is an antique primitive museum quality piece.
