For your consideration an antique Midland Jump Start cigar lighter. Fresh from a local estate. The lighter is in good condition. The case is made of wood and nicely finished. The top parts are made of metal and plated. There is some plating loss. The fill cap for the lighter fluid tank is missing. The rest of it looks to be complete. It has an electrode on the front of the top. The inside has an old coil. I think it supposed to work off of an old 6 volt dry cell battery. I do not know how to test it to see if it still works. I could not find a name anywhere on it. I think the name plate is missing. I did some research and I think this one was made by Midland. It measures about 15" in height by 7 1/4" square at the base. These old lighters were found in early saloons and smoking establishments around the turn of the century. They operated by tilting the cylinder forward. The wick in the top of it would then pass underneath the electrode and a spark would jump to the metal edge and light the wick. When it was tilted back in place the flame would be extinguished. It would provide a quick light for customers. An excellent addition to any vintage tobacciana or antique collection or if you just want to own a really neat old cigar lighter. I am selling this item with no reserve. If you have any questions or need additional pictures please feel free to email me. If needing pictures please send me your email address.
