A Rare 1902 Goldthwaites Folding Globe With Original Carrying Case Advertised as "The Beautiful Silken Sphere" Goldthwaite advertised his unique folding globe as a "light, handy, beautiful and durable model of the world ". This exceptional artifact comes complete with the original carrying case. The cartography is printed on "expensive white satin" that still remains as brillant and ledgible today as when first printed! The globe employed 7 different colors in the cartography, an unusual extravagance for a globe of this period. The silken sphere was mounted over a copper-steel wire frame that Goldthwaite claimed would not break and has an umbrella type mechanism used to inflate or collapse the globe for travel. When opened the globe attains a diameter of 12in. and the entire ensemble is 18in. long. Goldthwaite first patented this globe in Aug of 1898 and it was corrected and revised in 1902. An extremely well preserved and rare novelty globe that would be an asset to any collection! More notable political points of interest; Ottoman Empire , Austrian-Hungarian Empire, St. Petersburg in Russia (changes to Petrograd in 1914), Congo Free State (established in 1885 and becomes Belgian Congo in 1908), Orange Free State ( est. in 1902), Panama has yet to gain independence from Colombia (becomes independent in 1903), Indian Territory is visible in Eastern Oklahoma (exist until 1907). The condition of the globe and mechanism is excellent. Some wear to the satin on the tines and at the N & S poles but no tearing or holes. Some minor soiling. The box has wear and has been affixed in those areas with duck tape. Please refer to Photographs. As Always Thank you for Looking
