These molds are truly incredible and quite rare. They date from the 19th century- artisans hand carved wood blocks then set them into a wood frame. The mold was then used for wall/ceiling and furniture decoration, or for the highly ornate gesso frames for paintings of the period. I have seen these made from pitch and wood, but had never come across ones carved from wood. I found a stash of them and will be listing them all on etsy. I found them in an old New York estate. These are great for home decorating, they can hang them on your wall- they are true works of art in and of themselves. They can also be used still, as they were originally intended, to make molds. They are generally very heavy and thick as they had to hold to a great deal of industrial usage. This one measures 18.25" L x 4" W x 2" H and weighs 3lbs. The handwritten numbers on the end appear to be reference numbers for the mold from the original factory.
