An Antique 19 th Century (or earlier) Chinese Sword (dao). The 34.25 inches (85.5 cm) long, overall, single edged, curved willow-leaf shaped (liuyue) blade is in near excellent condition. The sword has all original matching brass fittings, cord wrapped hilt, and black leather covered wooden scabbard. The rigid, unpolished, blade is differentially-tempered or of inserted-edge (qiangang) construction, 24 inches long (60 cm), 1 ¼ inches wide (3.2 cm), and 5/16 inches (7 mm) thick at the guard with a 7 inch (17.5 cm) back-edge. Point of balance is 6 inches (15 cm) from the guard. Brought back as a souvenir of the Boxer Rebellion, antique Chinese weapons in original conditon are very scarce. Porcelain and silk were far more popular souvenirs and many edged weapons were melted down and destroyed during the Cultural Revolution to create industrial steel.
