UNUSUAL ANTIQUE YOMUD TURKOMAN ENSI, Central Asian Tribal, Turkmenistan, last third of the 19th century, and very good overall condition for the collector, showing evenly low pile with areas of old restorations. The exact size is: 4'-10" x 6'-1" (147 x 185 cm). A rather rare type of antique Yomud-group Turkomen ensi that is symmetrically knotted on natural wool warps and wool wefts dyed red. The field design of the four quadrants display rows of the "dogadshyk" (doqacik) motifs, an uncommon element for ensi and also found used as a field motif on smaller Yomud-group weavings. An unusual aspect is the single "kavirga" or "Yomud eagle" motif creating a directional mihrab effect. Both of the elem panels display the ubiquitous "gapyrga" or "Yomud tree" motif. Damage to this carpet was restored in its past history and some of the dyed wool that was used has faded over time (see close up photos). The side cords are not original, but the sides are complete and have been securely re-wrapped with red wool.
