Please note, we have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description:This listing is for a Fine 19th Century French Louis XVI Neoclassical Style Rosewood Inlaid Mixed Stone/Marble Top Commode. The piece is beautifully inlaid, with simply incredible detail - the inlaid hymnal reads "Pont D'Avignon", which translates "The Bridge of Avignon", an ancient french rhyme and bridge in France built between 1175 and 1188 to connect Avignon with Rhone. Floral arrangements flank to the right and left of the central image, a collection of musical instruments with a foliate surround. An urn below a hanging fold of drapes brings life to either side of the commode. The commode rests carefully on four tapered legs, the front two of which are inlaid to simulate fluted carvings, each terminating on square brass feet, below which brass casters originally rested. These original casters are still available to install if you wish to do so. Three small drawers rest above two large drawers, each being hand dovetailed with oak secondaries. Each drawer has fully functional locking hardware, which may not be original when looking at some kerf marks that indicate a possibly smaller set of lock hardware for the drawers. The lower drawer is incredibly crafted to actually become part of the front legs when in closed position. This is a stunning work of art, executed with precision by a master craftsman. Incredible manipulation of veneers create fine portraits that require a lifetime of study to develop. It has a wonderful mellow finish with light oxidizing throughout and a growing patina that give it a warmth that can only be produced through years of use. This is a fine acquisition that will become a treasure in your family and a delight in your home. Measurements: 47 1/2" wide, 22 3/8" deep, 35 /4" high including marble; marble 1" thick. Condition: Visually Outstanding Condition - Early finish, probably original. Two cracks in marble repaired, one with iron bars beneath to support permanently. Chips to edges of marble. Veneer loose on legs, very little missing veneer though there is some here and there - there also is restoration and repair here and there to veneer. One escutcheon on top drawer needs to be reattached - light oxidizing around this drawer, visible in photos. Locks may be replaced, as small kerf marks are visible on some that do not match with the edges of the current locking hardware. Other hardware original, including metal mounts, escutcheons and pulls. Keys probably not original, though all three keys work. Modern screws secure a brace running along the underside of the middle drawer, not replicated on any other drawer - probably added in this century for stability and to allow the drawer to run smoothly. Non-noteworthy dings, scratches and abrasions throughout consistent with age and use. Please see photos below for full disclosure of condition and condition report.
