1487 SMITHFIELD AVE LINCOLN, RI 02865 3 Antique 19thC *Lourde-LaPlace* French Military Watercolor Paintings *NR* …… Charles Louis Alfred Lourde LaPlace was a French Military General who documented, in Watercolor paintings, many of the Battles of the Crimean War along with other interesting Military scenes. It was very difficult to find original works of art by this artist, and most of his known paintings are in museums. You will find examples of his hand colored engravings, depicting battle scenes, however they are rare also. …… I recently was able to acquire a small, unknown, collection of original Paintings by Alfred Lourde-LaPlace, as well as two, authentic Legion of Honor Awards given to him by the French Government. I have divided these paintings into 5 auctions and am selling them separately, as well as the two Legion of Honor Awards. ……Alfred Lourde-LaPlace was a very talented Watercolorist. His attention to historic details is exceptional. There are three original works of art in this auction, signed by “A Lourde”, all related to his Military Life. …… The first painting in this auction is an important painting, not a print. It is titled at the bottom, “Attaque du Village de Pinas.” It depicts "mouvement tournant de la cavalerie par des gues de la save mont" ("turning movement of the cavalry by colleagues to save the Mount" ). This watercolor measures 12 ½” by 19 ¼”. There is some toning around the outside edges and some roughness to the paper, on the right hand side, but that’s it. It is difficult to see, but there are the faintest of crosshatch lines on this painting, probably because it was going to be used as an engraving. …..Next is an original pencil drawing dated, “Feb 1851.” It is titled, “Kossuth.” Lajos Kossuth 1802-1894 was the Father of Hungarian democracy, Hungarian Statesman and Freedom Fighter. We were able to find an engraving of this original drawing and this is guaranteed to be the original drawing for this engraving. This drawing measures 12 ¼” by 15 ¾”. ……The third and last item in this auction is an 8 1/8” by 10 1/8” watercolor painting. This thin paper painting is laid down on a 12 ¼” by 18 ½” stiff paper mount. Hand written along the bottom edge it reads, “Grotte ayant servi de refuge aux Kroumirs de Ben-Abd-Allah. (Tunisie 1881)” (Cave used as a refuge for Kroumirs Ben-Abd-Allah.)
