Gaskets contain the pressure. They seal joints at cylinder heads and at pipe and valve flanges. If part of the gasket blows or fails, the steam leaks, the pressure falls and the engine stops. Early gaskets were made of greased leather or tallowed hemp. Later gaskets were composed of felt, rubber, or a rubber-asbestos compound. High-temperature gaskets were made of a soft metal such as copper. This gasket cutter cuts circular gaskets up to 20 in. in diameter. The two sliding cutter knives were adjusted for the external and internal gasket diameters using a scale on the edge of the bar and then the knives were locked in place. The point on the left was inserted into the sheet gasket material and the knives were rotated around the point by moving the grip on the right. After the gasket was cut, one used a punch to make bolt holes. Gasket cutter of the early 20th century. No maker's mark. Working condition. Length: 11 in. Width: 1 1/4 in.
