Being as we are not experts and there is not provenance with these, we are describing them the best we can. If we get something wrong, let us know and when able pass your insights on. NOTE: Any that came from the collection marked Pre_Columbian or such we are putting down in the reproduction category first as we do not have the capabilities to carbon date anything. Please bid on these based on what you know and feel. These will all be going up over the next few weeks, so check back regularly if you love ethnographic items.In this auction we have an antique African tribal art, figural goat ceremonial wooden mask! We believe this may have affiliation with the Baule tribe of Africa! This tribe believes that masks allow you to have a closer contact to the supernatural...keep scrolling there are 23 pictures and more description beneath the photos below!world. This figural goat has two horns that curl downward and its mouth is open. This measures approx. 14 1/2" x 11 3/4" x 7 1/2". We are calling this shabby chic due to the wear to commensurate with age, the scuffs and scratches throughout and the split on the back, top of the head which one split is seen on the upper inside. (Our Favorite)TRIBAL AFRICAN ARTBAULE (BAOULE, BAWULE)Côte d'IvoireThe Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people, and maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend, during the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means "the child has died." Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society.
